Would you survive with no SMSes, email or Facebook for 8 hours? What about moving around NP with your bare feet for the whole day?
These were just some of the many pledges made by NP students and staff as they took up the “Pass the Fast” challenge on Friday, 3 June 2011.
Examples of pledges:
- Not using social networking (e.g. Twitter, Facebook, MSN Chats)
- Fasting from sitting for 8 hours
- Food Fast (e.g. No breakfast, lunch, eggs, junk food, flavoured drinks)
- Communication (e.g. No talking / email)
- Technology (e.g. I will not use my iPod for 8 hours)

Championed by the students and staff at the School of Humanities & Social Sciences (HMS), "Pass the Fast" is a simple one day campaign to increase empathy regarding issues of poverty and hunger.... and to promote meaningful reflections on many things we are so dependent on, or we have taken for granted in a material and busy world.
"Pass the Fast" is a lead- up to the 30-Hour Famine Camp which HMS is co-organising with World Vision on 17-18 June 2011 as part of NP's outreach initiative. The 30-Hour Famine Camp is an annual Global Youth Movement which aims to raise awareness about fighting poverty, hunger and injustice. Participants will fast from food for 30 hours while engaging in activities to experience the lives of people in impoverished countries.
