About
the Diploma
Are you interested in calligraphy, literature, or opera? Want to know more about Chinese culture and history? If you want to teach Chinese, work in Chinese media industry, or do business with China, then the Diploma in Chinese Studies (CHS) is for you!
The first and only such course offered in a local polytechnic, the diploma aims to meet the growing demand of professionals who are fluent in Chinese and have a good understanding of Chinese culture. With over 80 per cent of the course conducted in Chinese, you will learn about Chinese literature, popular culture, and communication. You will also be trained in practical skills like translation and media production. CHS gives you a firm understanding of China's rich history.
In your final year, you can choose either the Teaching Track or the Non-Teaching Track. In the Teaching Track, you will spend a semester at the National Institute of Education (NIE). After graduation, you will spend a year at NIE and receive a second qualification – a Diploma in Education (Chinese Specialisation) awarded by NIE. You will receive training to become primary school Chinese Language teachers. You could apply directly to the Ministry of Education (MOE) for a Teaching Bursary.
In the Non-Teaching Track, you will spend one semester on an industry project or as an intern in a company where you will put your language skills into practice.
All final year students will also go on a semester-long China Immersion Programme . You will attend classes at a top Chinese university – Zhejiang University City College (ZUCC) or Huazhong Normal University (HNU) – and experience life in China through cultural trips to key cities.
