BZSE Social Entrepreneur Mentors

The Diploma in Business & Social Enterprise (BZSE) has a unique learning approach. Students are provided with inspirational social entrepreneurs to be mentors. Some of these are award-winning individuals who have made impact internationally. Given the opportunities to network with and work alongside the range of local and international social entrepreneurs, BZSE students get to learn beyond what textbooks and classroom learning can achieve.

See profiles of some social entrepreneurs here.

In 1994, Pierre Tami and his wife Simonetta, established the Hagar Shelter in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, as a haven for women who had fallen victim to violence and sexual exploitation. As an organization that premises on social rehabilitation and economic empowerment, Hagar’s primary mission is to create safe, meaningful employment with a decent wage for the beneficiaries and to produce profits to provide funding to social activities, through employment in fully commercial enterprises owned by Hagar. Hagar works with Cambodia’s trafficked and abused women and children through individualized and long-term holistic programs. Hagar has assisted more than 100,000 women and children through its social programs and economic projects. The U.S. State Department in 2004 selected Tami and the Hagar project as one of its six international heroes in the struggle against the global slave trade. The story of how Pierre Tami created one of the most innovative programs for freed slaves will inspire even the most entrenched cynics. Pierre, a Swiss businessman, had devoted 12 years to helping people in crisis—including a long stint in Japan aiding the homeless in the parks of downtown Osaka and several years more building up a youth drop-in center in Singapore.

The Diploma in Chinese Studies (CHS) has strong collaborations with local and overseas institutions. All CHS students spend a semester studying in a renown Chinese university such as Zhejiang University City College (ZUCC) or Huazhong Normal University (HNU). Those on the teaching track will then proceed to complete their CHS Diploma in their last semester at the Singapore's National Institute of Education in Singapore. Meanwhile, the media track students will be attached to various established media companies for their internships or project work.  Media companies which our CHS media students were attached to include SPH Chinese Newspapers Division, MediaCorp, etc.

Extracts from teaching track students sharing their experience at NIE:-

"Cultivating Self and Others - The CHS course has helped me to think in depth and become a well-balanced person. To be a competent teacher, one has to cultivate self and others. For self, we have to constantly upgrade ourselves and improve on our Chinese standard, so as to be a wise and knowledgeable teacher. We should also try to create our own teaching techniques and methodologies so as to build a bridge between us and the students for effective learning."  - From Dexing, 2008 final year CHS student (Teaching Track).

"Intensive & Enriching Course - The lecturers often share their teaching experiences by telling us some of the everyday happenings in the campus. These interesting and humorous stories are great sources of inspiration to the students. We also learnt new and creative methods of teaching from the lecturers." - From Cuiyan, 2008 final year CHS student (Teaching Track).

"热忱、忙碌与充实 - 教育学院的老师常常通过校园故事,分享教学经验。这些有趣的故事、幽默的讲述,积极的引导,给带来很大的启发。们也从老师身上获取不少新颖的创意教。" - 翠燕, 2008 年, 第三年中文系华文教学专业学生.

      我最喜爱写教案,
       更喜欢亲自做教具陪伴,
       虽然每次都忙得很晚,
       但换来的却是无比的满足感。- 翠燕的打油诗
