(Sin Yi has been granted the NCSS Study Award and will be pursuing her studies in NP's Advanced Diploma in Early Intervention (Special Needs) programme offered by the School of Humanities as a part-time course).

Congratulations to the following five teams of BZSE 1st year students for being awarded the seed funding from CITIBANK-YMCA YOUTH FOR CAUSES 2008. Each team will be given $1,600 to impleament their project.   

The five teams are:
1) B.R.A.I.N.S. - Eugene Luah (Team Leader), Melissa Poh, Shawnald, Chin Juo Wi
VWO: Movement for the Intellectually Disabled of Singapore
B.R.A.I.N.S. aims to raise funds for the intellectually disabled in MINDS to subsidize their skills learning fees.

2) ROCKY - Chew Zhi Qiang (Team Leader), Mabel Ong Rui Rong, Chia Sing Yee, Heng Sock Ping
VWO: Disabled Peaople's Association (DPA)
The group plans to help fund DPA's public education and training activities.

3) Socialogist - Ronny Lim Wei Liang (Team Leader), Koh Yu Qi, Janell Tan Yu Ting, Julinda Chan Mei Jun
VWO: Simei Care Centre
The group aims to promote environmental friendliness and raise awareness for global causes.

4) Sole Makers - Justine Lee (Team Leader), Glory Tan, Cynthia Leong, Mathew Han
VWO: Bethesda Care and Counselling Services Centre
Sole Makers is a project dedicated to help create public awareness that there are many children around the world who are not able to own a single pair of shoes. The team will be marketing self-designed shoes to the public. For every pair of shoes sold, a pair will be given to an under-privileged child.

5) Y4Y Yay - Teo Pei Shan, Alison (team Leader), Billy Zheng Xiang Peng, Cheong Shee Mun, Francine Wee Wan Sin
VWO: Student Advisory Centre (SAC)
The team will be raising funds for SAC's Lunch Box Fund to provide meals and additional pocket money for needy students.

Eugene, Zhi Qiang, Ronny, Glory and Francine are also attending the Certificate Training Course in Volunteer Service Management offered by the YMCA-NUS Business School Volunteer Service Management Programme (VSMP).
Chinese Studies Year 2 student, Wai Foong, represented Ngee Ann Polytechnic in the 7th Chinese Bridge-International Chinese Proficiency Competition for College Students (第七届汉语桥”——世界大学生中文比赛). He emerged 3rd amongst representatives from various Universities and Polytechnics.
Organised by the Office of Chinese Language Council International (中国国家汉语国际推广小组办公室), the Chinese Bridge Competition aims to provide a stage for youth to display their Chinese proficiency and to create a platform for study and exchange, with the purpose of stimulating their enthusiasm and interest for learning Chinese, while at the same time augmenting their understanding of China and Chinese culture.
The Competition comprises a speech, a cultural performance as well as a written paper on China studies, including its cultural and language aspects.

Congratulations to Carina Binte Abdul Biji, Low Chiang Ling Sarah and Siti Nurwahidah Binte Aman for being the first three to be selected for this new award introduced by the PAP Community Foundation (PCF) Tampines West Branch.

The Award includes a one-time cash incentive of $4,000 and a starting basic salary of $1,600 per month with CPF contributions. The awardee needs to work with PCF Tampines West for three years. At the end of the three-year tenure, scholarship / sponsorship for a degree programme may be considered for those who show potential to be groomed for higher responsibilities.

PTWGA was initiated by Mr Masagos Zulkifli Bin Masagos Mohamad, MP for Tampines West & Senior Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Education & Ministry of Home Affairs.

Congratulations! Chang Cheng Yao (CHS 2nd year student) and Wong Sin Yi (ECH final year student), for winning the NW CDC School Level Award.
The North West Community Development Council (CDC) organises the Outstanding All Rounders Award (OAR) annually with the intent to recognise and award students who are not only academically outstanding but also inclined towards community service, leadership, the aesthetics and friendship.
 

At the Raffles International Conference on Education 2008's "Interweaving Curriculum & Community", five articulate and passionate first-year Psychology & Community Services (PCS) students, together with Course Manager and lecturer Ms Joyce Tang, and PCS Community Partner from HealthServe, Mr Peter Hsu, made a joint presentation on the students' integrated project. Congratulations PCS students Yeo YunJing, Jessica Ann Joseph Vincent, Yan ManHong, Siti Fasihah Subto and Oh ShaoShiuan. Well done!

The joint paper on "New Perceptions – through integrated experiential learning", was presented to an audience of teachers and academicians from secondary schools, Junior Colleges and tertiary institutions. The team shared the learning pedagogy implemented in the first year PCS programme. The learning approach conceptualised by Ms Tang is an outcome of the search for a teaching and learning methodology that combines theory with practice, which triggers transformation of values and perceptions, and inspires service and social responsibility.

Congratulations to Cheng Yao, Chinese Studies Year 2 student, for being the Overall Champion for 883JIA FM's first Campus Reporter Competition. Cheng Yao was also awarded NP Best Campus Reporter. 

This competition was organized by SAFRA Radio 883JIA FM in search of campus reporters in every tertiary institute in Singapore.

In the first round, 2 participants from each institute were shortlisted to prepare one campus news to present on air each week. In the Final Competition, the overall champion was selected from 10 finalists from different campuses. The event was held in IMM on 8th Dec 2007. 

In his 2nd year, Jason Oh is one of our NP Student Excellence Award Winners in AY2007/08. He is awarded the "Special Achievement Award". Congratulations, Jason! 

First- year Psychology & Community Services (PCS) student Jason Oh distinguished himself academically and recieved several awards:.

1) "Special Effort Award" from Asian Women Welfare Association (AWWA), 2007
2) "Be With Me" Scholarship from Asian Women Welfare Association (AWWA); 2007
3) "Tan Sri Dr Tan Chin Tuan" Scholarship, 2007 

Jason, who suffers from Duchene Muscular Dystrophy,  represented Singapore in the following sports events:-

1) 1st Singapore Boccia Invitational Open 2007 (20 -22 July 2007)    
2) 4th ASEAN PARA GAMES 2008 at Nakhon-Ratchasima, Thailand (21- 25 Jan 2008)

 

   

Early Childhood Education Year 2 student, Hakim, was selected to represent Singapore in the debating series, Titian Minda 2007, in Brunei Darussalam. He won the Best Debater award and his team was the overall champion. 

Titian Minda is a debate series aimed at forging friendship and closer relations between college students from Singapore and Brunei Darussalam.
The last debate was held from 16th to 24th Aug 2007.

Wu Qi, a final year Chinese Studies student has published her first originally written book. The 284- page novel for youth in Singapore, “ 仲夏 HOUSE” (published in Nov 2007) is on sale at $9.90 at the book stores in Singapore.

Wu Qi says she will be writing another novel soon. Way to go, Wu Qi...
