Practical Fashion

November 24, 2011 11:48 AM by Noel

We all know that fashion plays a big part in our life, especially one of a teenager. So, we take our time to shop, dress up and look pretty/presentable at all times. But....today, I decided to take a look at fashion from another angle: practicality. We often like to wear what we want without having to care much about anything else, and unfortunately, sometimes we end up damaging or dirtying our outfit because of unforeseen circumstances. This is even more so during this period when our weather is extremely unpredictable.

I scouted for people from the various schools to ask them why they decided to wear what they wore to school that day. And here's what they have to say…

Regina Er, School of Business & Accountancy

"Today was a rather sunny day so I decided to keep my look simple. Shorts and sandals are my comfortable wear and I never leave my house without them on most sunny days! Despite that, I still bring along and wear a cardigan just in case the weather turns erratical and I'd need to keep myself warm. I ALWAYS think of a Plan B."

Aaron Goh, School of Engineering

"I chose to wear jeans and not bermudas or shorts to school because the weather recently has been rather cold. The rain comes and goes, and when it does come, the temperature seems to have taken a rather big dip. And, the reason why I wore these accessories and necklace is because they give off this nostalgic vibe and I'm really a person who's into vintage stuff, so this is essential to me."

Charlotte Tan, School of Film & Media Studies

"My usual wear range from dresses to random tops and pants and today just happens to be that random top and pants day. Because the colours I'm wearing might look a little dull, I decided to carry my laptop with the red polka dot sleeve today instead of keeping it in my bag. The rain has been unkind to me for the past few weeks so I made sure I wore my white creepers because psychologically I feel taller and safer with them."

Ong Zhi Yang, School of Health Sciences

"I had my six-week attachment and I just came back from the two-week break. So my friends and I are wearing our uniforms so that it will help us integrate back into the workforce for our four-month attachment. Basically, we wear it for in-campus trainings and even for documentation of nursing skills that we learnt in year one and year two. The main idea is to help prepare us for the attachment."

Chee Jiamin, School of Humanities & Social Sciences

"I tend to travel around a lot within school itself, so I try as much as possible to wear outfits that are more cooling. And that's also the reason for having so many maxi dresses in my closet! I wear these bangles because I like to hear them jingle when I'm walking as it reminds me of the times when I was young and played with the bell chimes. Also, I wore this pair of gladiators because they're just more comfortable compared to my other footwear."

Joanne Seo, School of InfoComm Technology

"As you can tell, I'm wearing the Sports and Wellness (S&W) because that was my last class for today. I decided to shower in school afterwards so I actually kept some of the toiletries in my bag, which I also use to contain my other files and homework. I went with this pair of shoes because I knew I would be doing sports today so I really wanted something easy to run and play in."

Lim Hwai Yi, School of Life Sciences & Chemical Technology

"The lecture theater (LT) always felt too cold for me so my jacket's my best bet when it comes to days with long lecture hours. I cannot live without my jacket because it'll feel like Siberia in the LT if I do. Also, I decided to go with the haversack and not my usual slingbag today because I've been exercising for the past few days and I just wanted less force to be on one shoulder. So wearing a haversack bag would balance out that force and thus easier on my shoulders."

Like I mentioned in the beginning of the article, we sometimes don't consider other factors when dressing up, but these people above have proven that it pays well to dress with practicality! You can still look good even if you're dressing to fit the weather. So, make sure you think again before heading out on a cloudy day in a pair of suede shoes!

Poshism: Upload Your Look!

September 22, 2011 04:18 PM by Noel

Started by three Ngee Ann students, Poshism is an online fashion community that marries fashion journalism and shopping in one. It allows users to upload their outfit ensembles onto the site together with where each piece was bought from, and also garner ratings for their look.

The founders behind it - Felix, Chester and Edwayne tells us that Poshism was started in hopes of providing a platform for people to express their own sense of fashion and for them to leave their own mark in the fashion world.

"We decided to start Poshism to introduce a fusion concept to Singapore. Ultimately, we feel that fashion needs to be shared. It is actually a good platform to inspire people to find their own persona and individuality", Chester emphasizes.

With Singapore breaking into the Top 10 list of Fashion Capitals in the world, Poshism could not be introduced into the local scene at a better timing.

"Despite the fact that the fashion industry is not at its peak in Singapore, and local designers lack the support and capital to grow and develop - the designers in Singapore definitely have great potential," Chester said.

Below are some of the looks that users uploaded:

Uli Chan's Summer Brights

Street Docs' On The Street with Suqin

Kenneth Geekface's Moves Like Jagger

Felix Loo's shot of Iskandar

Street Docs' On The Street with Liza

As long as the picture does not violate Poshism's policies, it will be featured on Poshism. Users don't have to worry about whether only certain styles of looks are accepted because Poshism doesn't seek to look out for certain traits in looks, because they strongly believe that everyone has their own fashion sense and how one expresses their individuality. Instead, they let users rate the looks that are uploaded.

With this being a fashion feature, what's a little fun without finding out what are the styles of the workers in Poshism?

Chester: My style when it comes to dressing up? It's definitely comfort first. If you're asking me about my daily wear, I'd prefer simplicity.

Cory: My style varies greatly day to day mostly based on my schedule of activities for the day. I have some days where I go crazy with my outfits but nowadays I'm leaning towards a more classy feel to them. Simple but chic.

As for Felix, his style ranges from classic wear to punk style.

As you can all tell by now, fashion in Singapore is definitely an industry with lots of hidden potential. And Poshism just proves to be a platform that helps anyone and everyone who are interested in the fashion industry to bring out their best. So if you're itching to start or pad up your fashion/photography portfolio, join Poshism today and start uploading some looks!

Michael Jackson Spotted in Ngee Ann Poly?

July 18, 2011 03:56 PM by Admin

You've probably seen him as a driver for our daily morning shuttle buses to Ngee Ann Poly. The question though: who exactly is this Michael Jackson look-alike?

When I first got an invite to his Facebook fanpage (set up by our lovely students), I was intrigued by his striking similarity to the real King of Pop.

The Facebook Fanpage

Shanjey Nair, 41, a part time Service Representative for SMRT Buses, is a true MJ fanatic. I met up with him recently to and trust me, it was all worth it as the man we met truly emulated MJ down to a tee.

He came along with his daughter, carrying outfits he had wanted to share with us. If you think the resemblance to MJ is uncanny in the photos, you'll have to meet him in real life. He donned a black outfit that bore "CTE" in yellow on red shoulder pads, and a red armband with a yellow star.

CTE= Children of The Earth

Star symbol, symbolising MJ's message of saving children around the world

Shanjey grew up listening to MJ's music since he was 10 and knows the lyrics to every single MJ song. Though in the process, this MJ fanatic's dress sense has faced with opposition from his family, religious restrictions, and subjected to the public's ruthless scrutiny.

Passersby would stop and ask for a photo of him, but Shanjey has had his fair share of naysayers who would make fun of him. He once recalled somebody doing a feminine parody of MJ which made him upset.

Shanjey, explaining which MJ look he has adapted.

To maintain his Motown MJ hairdo, he keeps his own hair trimming devices at home, to save costs.

Check out the two outfits that he's brought along:

This outfit replicated the one MJ made famous during the "This Is It" tour.

The crystals on it? Austria-imported Swarovski crystals!

My friend who tagged along, was the first person Shanjey's ever allowed to wear his outfits! Feeling honoured, she went on to strike a MJ pose!

"This is how you do it"

This outfit, is a blue version of the CTE outfit he wore.

And of course, an MJ look isn't complete without the famous sequined socks.

MJ's outfit with a buckle sans belt - a detail Shanjey took into account when creating this outfit!

A statuette of MJ that Shanjey has at home.

Shanjey's daughter, KMJ Kasturi, has also caught on to the MJ fever. She recently bagged the champion title at Okto's One Minute of Fame with her awesome MJ impersonation. It all started a few days after MJ's passing when KMJ asked to learn MJ's dance moves because she could not bear to see her father feeling so down.

Shanjey was really glad that he did his part to ensure a part of MJ's legacy continued with his daughter.

Shanjey did everything he could to perfect KMJ's performance. In order to staying true to MJ's performances, he even bought sound editing software and edited songs to the way it was performed during MJ's live concerts. They were perfected with apt explosions and special effects. And doing all of it with no prior knowledge of sound editing!

And as KMJ's manager, he made sure designs of costumes she wore were exact. "These designs were Michael Jackson's and we have no right to change it". He ended up spending $600 on the outfit that she wore for the competition that he sometimes had doubts of winning beause they were up against contestants who're performing solid and current dance routines or songs.

Check out the 45 degree gravity lean. WOW!

With the support of 20 - 28 of her friends and family among the audience, her performance of Smooth Criminal clinched her the first prize! Since then, they've been invited to perform at shows and have become quite famous in the local media. They were once invited to perform with Aznil Nawawi, a Malaysian celebrity well known for his quirky and entertaining talkshow, Macam Macam Aznil

Aznil and KMJ, the mini MJ extraordinaire.

Picking out a pair of shoes for an MJ outfit

Shanjey decided to make our last few moments together memorable by showing us some of his dance moves:

Check out the silver Tornado Stripe at the sides of his pants.

Dance, dance, dance.

Just like a real superstar, Shanjey has his own fanbase as well.

In the true spirit of MJ, Shanjey does his part to make the world a better place too. Every year, MJ fans in Singapore would gather to perform as part of fund raising initiatives for the Singapore Children's Society and cancer patients in Singapore. He would bring his daughter with him to town sometimes for his performances.

Shanjey gave both Ika and me a surprise with souvenirs! We're frankly humbled by his generosity. :')

MJ may have been dancing with the angels in heaven for a few years now but his spirit still lives back on Earth. I'd like to express my sincerest gratitude to Shanjey, who took time to share his passion with us!

ADIOS!

Sing-Gaga-pore

It is one thing to spend your life behind your computer and television screens watching a peculiar yet brilliant star's rise to fame, and a completely different thing to experience the brilliance live in concert. Yes ladies and gentlemen, I am one of Lady Gaga's devoted Little Monsters(her affectionate name for her loyal fans).

After Singtel announced that Lady Gaga will be in town for her Born This Way showcase, my heart bursted at the seems, nervous and excited all the same. Nervous, due to the very fact that only 2000 people will be admitted into the showcase and that the tickets had to be earned, and will not be available for sales.  I have already missed her during her first two visits here and in the course of waiting, she has gone on a completely new level of recognition. Thus, my conquest to earn Gaga karma points began, participating in everything Lady Gaga related, in hoping that the universe would kindly reward me with tickets to the showcase. True enough, I won myself two tickets through Singtel's Little Monsters Go Gaga competition.

A still from my 1 minute Judas dance performance. Check out my D.I.Y Poker Face mask.

The day finally came on the 7th of July, along with some of my close friends from Ngee Ann, we made our way to Marina Bay Sands Convention Hall, only to find that there are already so many people ahead of us.

Here are some photos of us, while waiting for our entry into that coveted space for 2000.

I adopted her hairstyle from during her 'The Fame' era coupled with the eye makeup from the Judas music video.

Joey and Matthias, both students from the School of Film & Media Studies, all decked out in eyeliner and black lipstick.

On the left is Chua Hanbin. He is a Year 2 student in the Diploma in Business in Information Technology. He was our photographer for that night.

Channeling our inner superstars right before we were allowed into the hall.

Our hearts became one with the other Little Monsters even before the showcase began. While waiting patiently, the fans decided to chant her songs to hype themselves up. After about half an hour of waiting, the doors were open and we were allowed into the Expo Hall. We had to wait some more, while Micheal Jackson songs were being played. That half an hour wait was probably one of my most nerve wrecking moments ever.

We got excited at the mere movements of the curtain, sights of vaguely feminine shadows as well as the occasional appearances by a middle aged Caucasian man. I bet the man(most probably the Stage Manager) felt like a complete superstar during his brief appearances. There was finally progress when The Muttons came out to hype the crowd further and in a matter of moments, the curtain dropped to reveal a woman's silhouette in a red lantern. This was no ordinary shadow, it was Lady Gaga's!

The crowd roared in exhilaration. I, was gasping for air. She looked so beautiful in person!

She started off with Born This Way, before before taking us back to the past with her first single, Just Dance. She sounded different live (in a very good way!), making her own melodious modifications to the way the songs were originally sung. She maintained interaction with the audience by integrating simple hand movements into her choreography as well as frequently asking them to jump with her.

Little Monsters, with their signature "Paws Up". Could you spot me? I was four rows away from the stage!

After going for an outfit change after performing Alejandro, she came back in a dress, heading straight to her piano. She pressed a few keys, and chatted with the audience, sharing with them her insecurity. "People always say nice things to me, but I have only been around for 2 and a half years". She continued her succession of notes, before belting out one of her latest singles, Hair

Lady Gaga, tearing up, halfway through the second bridge of the song.

It felt so surreal to be able to see Lady Gaga shed tears on stage. Hair, is an anthem about being free to express who you are. She was very touched by the fact that even though the single was out only three weeks ago, we had all learnt the words to it and meant every word of it. "Thank you for learning all the words in just three weeks, you crazy kids".

She moved on with You and I, before performing her hit singles like Telephone, Bad Romance and of course, her latest, Edge of Glory. She headed out to backstage one more time before hitting us with her most controversial single, Judas.

Judas was the crowd's favourite! I could feel the floor shaking underneath me, no kidding.

She was elevated into the air at the end of Judas, leaving us wanting even more.

It was only after everyone on stage got into a line and gave a bow, that the harsh reality of it all being a showcase hit us. The Little Monsters, however, waited, even until the stage hands came out to clear the set. Though she performed 10 songs, she left the show ending on a climax. The only thing left to do was to leave the place and start waiting for the Born This Way Ball in 2012. She promised her Singaporean fans that Singapore will be one of her stops for her World Tour next year. Before I go off, here are some photos from the after party.

A photo of us, featuring Khairul Ikhwan, one of the Little Monsters, recently featured in Stomp and The New Paper for his brave outfits.

Joey, taking a rest after standing one and a half hours in eight inch heels!

A lucky Little Monster, who had her card touched by Lady Gaga.

Matthias, trying out the wig.

Joey, with prominent Little Monsters. On her left, Lauren Brodinette, well known for her Born This Way jacket. On her right, Luke Idham, the multi talented performer.

Behind the crazy costumes and controversial songs, Lady Gaga inspires many, especially her little monsters. I hope this inspires you, "Do not allow people to dim your shine because they are blinded. Tell them to put on some sunglasses, because you were born this way!"- Lady Gaga.

All the best for your future endeavours and always, always remain true to who you are.

A Rose Among the Thorns

March 22, 2011 11:25 PM by Guest Blogger

This is a typical day for a Poly student (not in any particular sequence):

1. Attend lessons

2. Hang out with friends

3. Do homework

4. Surf the Internet

5. Eat

6. Sleep

Well, this is Sophia.

And this is her typical day (also not in any particular sequence):

1. Lessons and project discussions from morning till late afternoon

2. Filing invoices

3. Replying emails

4. Packing parcels

5. Sending parcels out

6. Collecting stocks

7. Attending a photoshoot

8. Editing the photos.

Wowed? Well, you should be! This is a day in the life of a teenage entrepreneur. 19 year old Business Studies student Sophia Chong has been running a blog shop since she was 18. This innovative teenager was inspired by Juice, a local magazine that covers music, fashion and entertainment.

The name of her blog shop, Juice Market, was named as such because Sophia “was reading through Juice magazine and was really inspired by them so that explains the 'juice'. As for market, I wanted my online store to have a wide variety of items like a market thus I named it "The Juice Market”.

Her online store is home to items such as:

This ruby leopard print slouch,

This Royal Umbrellia Top,

And this pair of Skull High Waisted Shorts

Drooling already? Well, you can check out some of The Juice Market's collection

Here!

What are sales like, then?

As Sophia has a “pretty good” amount of contacts in her mailing list, The Juice Market receives quite a number of hits whenever new products are launched. Most of the pieces that she puts out on sale are sold out and sales per month can range between $1000 and $5000. That’s quite a neat sum of money! Well, being a self sufficient and sensible young lady, Sophia uses her hard earned money to get her by and has in fact, started saving up for her University education. The money she saves could also be used as capital for future business investments.

With so many blog shops popping up all over the place, what sets hers apart from others? For one, you certainly do not see many blog shops marketing swimwear. Apart from that, Sophia strives to maintain a personal relationship with her customers and treats them like friends.

Sophia with some of her prized possessions.

When she first started out, Sophia did not expect such raging business. “I started it in the name of interest and fun instead of a money making business or brand recognition”.

However, as every good businessman (in this case, businesswoman) knows, diversifying is the key to reach out to a wider audience, which will in turn lead to a larger customer base and more profit. Therefore, Sophia has decided to launch JUICESEA, the swimwear line of Juice Market. The inspiration behind coming up with this expansion was based on her personal experience. Sophia struggled to find a piece of decent looking and affordable swimming costume even after scouring the Internet for ages. She “realised that there are so many nice designs around but they are either branded or not available in Singapore”. The creative side of her “love(s) how basic things like swimwear can be made beautiful” too.

Just by talking to her about her blog shop business, you would think the Sophia is a full time businesswoman. She single handedly runs the entire enterprise- she buys and restocks the clothes, models in them, launches them, replies queries from customers and sends out their items.

Sophia preparing for a photoshoot.

The model hard at work...

However, she is just a student who has just finished her final exams and will be starting out on her third year attachment soon. Her successful business does come at a price, though. Her online blog shop takes up most of her weekends. “I usually launch my collections on Sunday so my Friday and Saturday would be burnt just to prepare for the launch” Sophia shared. “Time is definitely a big factor as I’m juggling between my studies (and) Juice Market… so sometimes I have to stay up till 3am or 4am to reply all my customers and pack their parcels.”

Like any typical business, Sophia does encounter difficult customers too. “I do get quite a few dead buyers or buyers who are very demanding, and even a few who tried to cheat by saying they have made payment when they have not, but I've learnt along the way on how to deal with these customers. It isn't easy to smile it off when I face bad customers especially on a bad day but I'll still try to give in to them.” Certainly handled like a mature businesswoman!

Here are some of Sophia’s parting words to aspiring blog shop owners: “Success comes with passion and diligence. You must be willing to make sacrifices, work very hard and not give up easily. The whole journey will be a great learning experience.”

My Campus, My Runway Part 2!

March 9, 2011 01:55 PM by Guest Blogger

A couple of semesters ago, the school's campus newspaper, npTribune, ran an article on the stereotypes of NP's seven schools. One of the stereotypes brought up by the student reporter is that engineering students are a sloppily-dressed bunch.

So, with my second-hand Nikon, I trawled the school to bust this stereotype that fashionable engineering students are a rare find.

_________________________________________________________

Name: Tan Tai Wen

Age: 20

Course: Electronic & Computer Engineering, Year 3

If you want dark blue hair like his though, be prepared to spend quite a bit on the colouring and maintainence, as he bleached his hair twice before adding on the blue dye.

Shirt - Yves Saint Laurent

Jeans - Nudie Jeans

Shoes - Vans

Accessories - Cactus Pine

Bag- Porter

Q: Why did you choose to dye your hair blue?

A: "I wanted to try something something new before going in for National Service. Previously I had dyed my hair orange, brown and maroon."

_________________________________________________________

Name: Khor Si Hui

Age: 19

Course: Product Design & Innovation, Year 3

Si Hui's cheerful character is clearly reflected in her dressing with her interesting match of patterns and textures with her apparels. She makes it a point to always dress well before heading out of her house, debunking the stereotype that engineering students ae sloppy dressers. "It is important to take care of our images because you would want to leave a good first impression on other people. If you dress well, people will think well of you," says the sharp dresser.

Jumper - Blogshop

Blazer - Far East Plaza

Shoes - Zara

Watch - Marc Jacobs

Earrings - Topshop

_________________________________________________________

Name: Abdul Mannan

Age: 20

Course: Mechanical Engineering, Year 3

Rather than spending on items that are hot off the runway, the final-year Mechanical Engineering student prefers investing in quality apparels that are durable.

Shirt - Old Navy

Jeans - Naked & Famous

Shoes - Clarks Originals

Watch - Fossil

Bag - Gregory

Hat - Brixton

Glasses - Ray Bans

Q: The shirt jeans and boots combo is actually quite common among engineering students, so how do you develop your own style from the same apparels?

A: "It all boils down to the individual and how they carry their clothes off. Although it may seem similar to other students, the individual touches to the outfit can make a subtle difference."

_________________________________________________________

Name: Jervis Quack

Age: 18

Course: Aerospace Electronics, Year 2

If you think Jervis looks familiar, it is because he is the poster boy for the School of Engineering on their promotional materials for Open House 2011! On the stereotype of him and his schoolmates, Jervis says with a laugh, "I would say that we(engineering students) are unique(in our fashion sense)!"

Shirt - Sub

Short - Sub

Shoes - Lee Cooper

Earphones - Fourskin

_________________________________________________________

Name: Joey Pink

Age: 19

Course: Electronic & Computer Engineering, Year 1

Pink's distinctive style is in her feminine outfits that exudes a girly charm, minus the uncomfortable heels and suffocatingly tight dresses.

Dress - Queen's Couture

Shoes - Far East Plaza

Watch - Gucci

Bangles - Atro

Bag - Bugis

Q: How do you balance comfort and style?

A: "The key is accessorising! If you are wearing shorts and  a tank top, don't pair it with slippers. Try wearing some nice shoes and pile on the fancy accessories instead."

My Campus, My Runway

January 5, 2011 10:00 AM by Guest Blogger

I'll admit that part of the reason why I chose the poly route three years ago was because they don't require uniforms. Hey, don't judge! You'll get tired of uniforms too if you had to bleach and iron them almost every other day for all four years of secondary school. Besides, it's always fun to come back after the semester break because everyone will be decked in snazzy new clothes that they bought over the holidays.

There is a common misconception that poly students are a sloppy bunch, but I think our students look pretty good in terms of dressing and here is the proof!!!

Name: Alexis Chen

Age: 19

Course: Mass Communication, Year 3

Alexis stands out easily in a crowd of students at Ourspace@72 with her bright smile, long tresses and equally long legs. Sporting a casual loose top paired with a strappy wedges, the spunky girl revealed that she "never repeats [her] clothes." But don't take her for a spoilt princess, because she loves a good bargain and gets most of her clothes from...her mother's wardrobe!

Shirt - Mother's wardrobe

Shorts - New Future ("But I bleached and distressed them by myself.")

Hat - Far East Plaza ("Ten dollars only!")

Accessories - Diva, various blog shops, handmade by friend and mother's wardrobe.

Name: Nur Wajihah

Age: 18

Course: Nursing, Year 2

Wajihah goes bohemian chic with a flowery wristband and a vertical striped maxi dress, but toughens up her look with some unusual rings.

Dress - Flea market at *SCAPE

Shoes - Charles and Keith

Accessories - Collected from Bangkok and Malaysia

Q: Who are your fashion icons?

A: "Twiggy and Audrey Hepburn! I like how they dare to be different and try new things."

Name: Chua Jie Le, Keane

Age: 18

Course: Mechatronics, Year 2

Keane keeps it smart casual with a crisp white shirt and a pair of blue jeans, but switches things up with a pair of boots and tribal keychains.

Shirt - G2000

Jeans - The Denim Shop (They cost a whopping $400, but a good pair of jeans will last for a very long time)

Keychain - Bangkok

Shoes - Clarke's

Glasses - Levi's

Name: Lavinna Kaur

Age: 19

Course: Mass Communication, Year 3

Looking good does not equate to splurging a whole month's allowance on branded goods. Lavinna shows a perfect example of how it is the person that makes the clothes, not the other way around. We are, after all, poor students. ):

Top - Cotton On

Cardigan - Cotton On

Jeans - Dorothy Perkins

Shoes - "A random shop in some mall"

Q: What is a staple item in your wardrobe?

A: "Jeans and a simple dress."

Name: Cheryl Ee

Age: 19

Course: Business Studies, Year 3

From her shirt to her bag to her short and even to her nail polish colour, Cheryl matches her outfits accordingly to create a look that's casual but not sloppily thrown together.

Tank top - Topshop

Shirt - Cotton On

Shorts - Forever 21

Shoes - Phuket

Necklace - "Bought from Guangzhou, when I went to China for a study trip!"

Q: How should a casual and comfortable outfit be worn in order to not look sloppy?

A: "Match your clothes with something extra, like for example, if you are wearing a tank top, dress it up with some accessories."

Name: Izmir Shah

Age: 18

Course: Aerospace Technology, Year 2

Izmir chooses to wear comfortable clothing, but does not compromise on style with an eye-catching pattern and bright colours. Check out his checkered shirt and bright red Vans!

Shirt - Bangkok

Pants - Bangkok

Shoes - Vans

Anklet - Bangkok

Q: How do you decide on what to wear for school?

A: "I just wear whatever that feels comfortable."

Name: Delight Ng

Age: 19

Course: Mass Communication, Year 3

If you think that Delight looks familiar, then you probably have heard of Kim Jonghyun before:

Yeap, you guessed it! She's a fan of k pop and an even bigger fan of popular South Korean boy band, Shinee.

Windbreaker - Uniqlo

Shirt - Bugis Street

Jeans - Uniqlo

Shoes - Takeshitadori, Harajuku, Japan

Accessories - Far East Plaza and gifts from friends

Non-prescription glasses - Online shop

Beanie - 77th Street

Headphones - Challenger's

Q: What is a must have item for you?

A: "Accessories! I will feel naked if I don't wear at least a ring"

Name: Shahrul

Age: 19

Course: Facilities Management, Year 3

Nothing feels as good as a pair of comfortable jeans. And hey, when you feel good, you look good as well right? ^^

Shirt - Zara

Jeans - Bought online

Accessory - 310 Woodlands

Shoes - The Denim Store

Q: What are some of your favourite brands?

A: "I like Flathead, Skulls and Redwings. I like wearing denim."

Name: Mavis Ngui

Age: 19

Course: Mass Communication, Year 3

This final year Mass Communication student's fierce attitude is clearly evident, from her facial expression to her cooler-than-you shades and Chanel bag. Yes, a Chanel bag for school. I am turning green with jealousy as well.

Shirt - French Connection

Jacket - Topshop

Tights - Uniqlo

Slippers - Havianas

Bag - Chanel

Shades - Reboonz

Alright that's all I have for this post, but don't forget to come down to Open House from this THURSDAY TO SATURDAY, 6 TO 8 JAN, to experience how poly is like, from the fashion to the food to the facilities, for yourself! We will also be giving out free NP tee-shirts at the Convention Centre to those who perform the NP Cheer...so remember to grab all your friends and join in the fun!

And here is a totally pointless but obligatory photo of my friend and I on the first day of school. It has been our tradition since year 1!  This will be our last photo since we will be graduating soon. T_____T

Anyway the whole school has been pretty busy since it reopened because we are all getting ready for Open House 2011! SO PLEASE COME! I PROMISE IT WILL BE FUN! :D

Launch of the Marina Bay Sands!

June 28, 2010 08:05 AM by Geraldine

Hey guys! How’s your holidays been going so far? For those of you lucky people who actually have holidays, unlike us people who are currently doing our final year internships, that is. Hope it’s been a good one for you guys!

In any case… guess what?

Last wed, I had the opportunity to attend the press launch for Marina Bay Sands! I headed down to MBS with my peeps, JY and Sophie, early in the morning for the press con at 10. (We were nearly late btw, thanks to a certain someone who had to cut their nails… Heh. ;P)

It was really quite cool ‘cause there was like, over 1100 journalists from all over the world in the Grand Ballroom that they used for the press con.

I think this is Andrea de Cruz... Hmm...

It was a really huge event. There were translators for about 7 or 8 languages, like Mandarin, Korean, Japanese, etc, so for foreign journs unable to speak English, they got to wear this cool headset thing to listen to the translator’s interpretation of what was being said at the conference.

After the conference, we had good food!

<
Only got pics of my dessert, 'cos I forgot to take a pic of lunch. D:

Hehe. Then we went back for a couple of interviews, and attended this Gong ceremony thing, which was really just a formality in itself. We walked about after the ceremony, going to the lobby of MBS hotel because there was a VIP event going on! There were like, tons of rich, scary people milling about as they waited to sign in their attendance at the reception table.

The owners of MBS on the foremost left...

It's like this sea of black, right?!

It was like they had this palpable aura of “I’m rich and you’re not hahahaha you look sucky by the way”, and frankly, I felt quite intimidated in my silly old clothes while surrounded by the elite who were wearing bow ties and ball gowns everywhere. D:

Anyway, we headed back out, and attended this cool outdoor concert! JJ Lin, Kelly Rowland and the Jersey Boys performed, but it started raining halfway so we ran back to the media center for shelter.

It's awesome to be part of the media, ok! A lot of hard work, but sometimes a lot of fun!

Some Climbing World Championship - super heartwracking for me to watch the climbers just... climb! D: Singapore won, though! :D

And finally the day ended with yet another bout of good food! Heheh we were like gluttons over there.

This was dinner... Roast duck, baked cod fish in honey, fried prawn in salted egg, egg soup with crab meat (the real kind!) ho ho ho... Delish!

Followed by dessert... Sticky rice, osmanthus jelly, almond jelly, etc. ;D

Anyway, we enjoyed this opportunity to go to MBS, which would not have come about for our internship! Ho ho ho…

Here's a pic of all of us! From L to R: JY, me, and Sophie. And yes, I know I am short. (=n=)

In fact, when standing next to Sophie, I look like this:

D: I know. I am short. If Sophie hadn't tilted her head, I'd have looked even shorter and she'd have towered over me like some willowy tree! D:

Hehe. Anyway, hoped you enjoyed the pics! Have you been to MBS yet? What did you think of it? Let me know! :)

Haaaay guys!

Hello hello hello! I know some of you might be having exams at the mo, and some of you might have finished them all (and are happily chillaxing at home).... but guess what??

npTribune Volume 43 Issue 1 is out!

Yes! After months of hard work (which is still continuing by the way - we have no rest D:<), npT is out and I am most definitely happy with what we've managed to produce. Though mostly I'm too exhausted nowadays to do more than bleat 'Meh' half-alive. Talking about the issue, though, we have a graduation suite lined up just for you in the first page and in the centerspread! We feature the top 7 graduates and find out how is it, really, that they managed to cope with schoolwork on top of all their other commitments like giving tuition to needy children and having fun like going out to karaoke!

Not only that, we also have articles on going abroad for a university education, which is the first part of our university feature, and Dialogue in the Dark, where we speak to Chen Wei Lian (Kelvin Tan) who won Project Superstar in 2005, and also a fashion page on how to dress up or down for school with a few basic clothing items!

Mehehehe. I'm really quite proud of it (despite my lacklustre appearance). And finally, to entice you to get your very own copy of npTribune, we also have contests running in it! There's one called 'My NP', where you get to win a Nikon Coolpix P6000 camera worth over $800, ice cream vouchers at awesome ice cream parlours near school, Dialogue in the Dark tickets, and a GAP voucher worth $250!

So. Doesn't that make you wanna grab a copy of npTribune NAO? ;P

PS: For those who can't get their hands on a copy of npT, here's the link to npTribune's website! Check it out! :)

The dirty truth behind food photography

June 1, 2010 02:25 PM by Geraldine

I love food.

I mean, who doesn’t, right? But even though I love food to death, I got a rather rude awakening when I had to do a food photoshoot for my magazine.

I mean, just look at these pictures. Don’t they just look gorgeous?

From NickNguyen

From aiyah

From markncchang

But the truth is that things aren’t all that they seem! The truth was that I had to shift around the food in order to make them look good, so what really happened ended up something like…… this:

Heh. And while I can’t show the photographs from the photoshoot itself, I can tell you they most certainly made me go like this!

So yes! I hope you enjoyed this blog post!

(PS: I just happened to be really inspired by Hyperbole and a Half. Heh.)

(WAIT AH, please also note that I am not saying the above gorgeous pictures of food [not my lame sort of funny drawings] are fake or whatever. I'm just using them as an example of mouthwateringly delicious food. My burger photoshoot is the one that's all fake. So ya. PLEASE NOTE!)
