 Overseas Programmes

FMS, like other schools in Ngee Ann Polytechnic, believes in broadening the horizons of our students through engagement with the world. This is done through several ways:
  1. Overseas Internships
  2. Overseas Immersion Programmes
  3. Overseas Study Trips
  4. Overseas Community Service Trips
  5. Conferences/competitions/performances overseas
  6. Adventure and leadership camps in neighbouring countries
The school has a subsidy programme that helps needy students afford this exposure, with up to a maximum 75% subsidy in cases of great financial need.

In recent years, some of the places our students have gone to include:
  • Bangkok
  • Beijing
  • Berlin
  • Boston
  • Cambodia
  • Connecticut
  • Hawaii
  • Hong Kong
  • Los Angeles
  • Manila
  • Melbourne
  • Nias
  • New York
  • Prague
  • Sabah
  • Shanghai
  • Shaoxing
  • Taipei
  • Tokyo
  • Wuhan
In addition to gaining precious life experiences, our students often produce media work on the study trips, returning with videos, articles and radio capsules that are then broadcast or published in local channels and print and online publications. Some of the work also is also showcased in photo exhibitions at The Arts House or Asian Civilisations Museum. These deliverables add to the students' portfolio and hone their skills as independent media/content producers who learn to navigate foreign constraints and troubleshoot on the ground.

What follow are:
1. an announcement of our latest immersion programme involving DVFX students going to Bangkok
2. a  Feature Writing assignment produced by our second-year Mass Communication students, who had an immersion programme with China's highly-ranked Wuhan University and
3. a link to a photo exhibition at VivoCity by two Mass Communication students who captured vivid scenes in Cambodia when they went on a community service trip with Lien Aid.

DVFX Student Immersion Programme to Bangkok

13 DVFX year students will be flying to Bangkok, Thailand, to participate in the first DVFX 6-week immersion programme. The programme was made possible by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between FMS and BUIC (Bangkok University International College)  on July 1. In addition to the trip, the two schools will also develop future opportunities to promote interaction and cultural exchanges.

ExCapades

Every time I travel, I get an overwhelming feeling of excitement. It’s a new place with new experiences, new adventures and new people! Travelling opens your eyes to the wide world, shows you God’s creations and more importantly, educates you on the ways of the world. It is a humbling experience to be able to travel, and you truly get an idea ofhow small Singapore really is. But if travelling is the ultimate joy, then travel writing, to some, is the ultimate dream.

This first issue of EXcapades presented considerable obstacles and difficulties to both my team and I, but through combating language barriers and exploring the vastness of a foreign city, we have prevailed.

So it is with great pleasure that our team presents the first issue of EXcapades!

In this issue we feature the lovely city of Wuhan, a place most Singaporeans probably have never even heard of. We bring you around a city that possesses the best of both worlds, boasting both a developed infrastructure while at the same time promising a relatively low cost of living compared to Singapore.

Throughout the magazine there are stories and tips that will guarantee you a fruitful and fulfilling stay in one of China’s more developed cities. Our stories are based on autumn, arguably the best time of year to visit.Temperatures average at about 20 to 24 degrees Celsius, a dream for any Singaporean sick of our year-round equatorial heat.

Find out about the majesty of Mount Wudang, goings on along the Yangtze River, and learn about the hearts of the people in Wuhan. All these and more in this issue of EXcapades. Happy travels!

The Demon in the Water photo exhibition
Learn about the appalling water conditions in Cambodia through "The Demon in the Water", a photographic exhibition at VivoCity featuring 24 of the best photographs by final-year MCM students Yeo Kai Wen and Lee Xian Jie, as a result of the media expedition that 6 FMS students and lecturer Craig McTurk went on with Lien Aid in September 2008.
