As a part of the 2011 Toronto Student Film Festival's Showcase Program, held May 14 in Toronto, Canada, FMS took home a Special Jury Selection prize. Rice (2010), directed by Sofrie Yusof (FSV '11) for his Directing for Camera module, was awarded the prize at a screening attended by more than 400 people.
The event included 27 films out of the hundreds submitted where Rice was the only Asian selection out the mostly US and Canadian fare.
The prizes were awarded by a panel which included Canadian filmmakers Jane Tattersal, Sarah Polley, Calvin Thomas, and Yonah Lewis. According to the organizers, the panel "thought the film treated a difficult subject thoughtfully and sensitively and were moved by it. As was the audience which was absolutely silent during the screening."
As part of the award, Sofrie wins a trophy, $500 and a $1,500 scholarship to undertake a program at the New York Film Academy. |
