 National Youth Business Challenge

NATIONAL YOUTH BUSINESS cHALLENGE
A Challenge for Youths to be Enterprising for the Good of Earth’s Environment

In line with the Ministry of Education’s thrust to foster awareness of the importance of earth friendly businesses, the School of Business and Accountancy, Ngee Ann Polytechnic and Compass Point Shopping Centre are jointly organizing a competition to harness the energies of the youth to generate earth friendly business concepts and ideas. To provide realistic hands-on learning, student teams in the finals will have the opportunity to market their earth business for 2 days, over the weekend in the Compass Point Shopping Centre in Sengkang.

Launch & Training Date: Thursday, 22 January 2009
Time: 2.00p.m. to 5.00p.m

Workshop for finals – Friday, 6 March 2009
Venue: Ngee Ann Polytechnic LT 22
Finals Competition Date:  Sat & Sun, 10am to 9pm, March 21 to 22 2009
Venue: Compass Point Shopping Centre

1.     Each school will be allowed up to 2 teams. Each team is to comprise 1 Mentor (Teacher-in-charge) and a maximum of 6 students (Secondary 3 to 5). 

2.    The challenge is for each team to develop an earth friendly business concept, source and produce the products, finance, merchandize and finally market it in a real mall.

3.    All participating teams are to attend the launch and training session to be held on Thursday, 22 January 2009 from 2.00 to 5.00pm at LT 26, Ngee Ann Polytechnic. Speakers will share with them the concept of Earth Friendly businesses and the importance of being environmentally conscious.  Teachers-in-charge and the students will also be briefed on the rules of the competition as well as receive some tips on generating ideas, marketing, accounting and developing an earth friendly business plan.

4.    Teams are to submit their earth friendly business concept online by 6 February 2009 via the NYBC website www.nybc-sg.com.  A standard template will be provided.

5.    20 teams will be shortlisted for the finals based on the innovativeness, viability and public education value of their earth friendly business concepts by 20 February 2009.

6.    A 1-day workshop for the teams will be held on Friday, 6 March 2009 at LT22, Ngee Ann Polytechnic to train and mentor teams on essential practical business skills and knowledge to set up earth friendly businesses.  Marketing, retail management, customer service, operations, finance & human resource management would be imparted to empower student teams for the challenge.

7.    The finals will be held at Compass Point Shopping Centre over the weekend from 21 to 22 March 2009. Students will have the opportunity to market their earth friendly products to shoppers and learn tremendously from the experience.
