 An Unforgettable YOG Volunteer Experience

The two weeks at the inaugural Singapore Youth Olympic Games 2010 (YOG) had been a fruitful one. About 20 Year One students from the Diploma in Tourism & Resort Management (TRM) had the opportunity to be attached to the YOG Accreditation Office during the event.

During the first few days, we were anxious to know if we would be able to work well with the officers and other volunteers. We were glad that they were all friendly and helpful young people with whom we could communicate easily and get along well. The athletes were also very charming and many of them left us bewildered by how tall they were despite their age! We had a good time getting to know one another, and we definitely missed the interactions we had with them.

Fun and laughter, tough work and anxiety, precious friendships and valuable learning experiences - these were the elements that made up the experience we had as volunteers. More importantly, we got the chance to hone our skills at managing guest relations and handling the operations of a high-profile and large-scale international event.

Here are some comments from my fellow course mates who volunteered at the YOG:
"It was a fun and enriching experience! It was good exposure for us as we were able to work with many different people."
Lindsay Chow, TRM, Year 1

"Volunteering for YOG was no doubt the most enriching and eye opening experience. I had the privilege to meet and interact with people from different cultures, ethnicities, religions and countries."
Fariha Shah, TRM, Year 1
