A spark from their lecturer, Ms
Audrey Lee, brought 4 students of the
School of Business & Accountancy - Kho Yan Hui, Toh Kwee Gek, Fong Mei Foong and Koh Joo Hiang - together to join the
Citibank - YMCA Youth for Causes 2008 Challenge.
Despite their hectic work load, these final year students did not forget about contributing to the community with a simple idea to make and sell handmade
"Wonderknots". Their idea was selected for the Challenge and the students were awarded
$1,600 seed money for their social-entrepreneurship venture.
Months of preparations and hard work ensued after the Challenge selection. The students found the Challenge to be an ideal platform to apply their knowledge gained at the School, ranging from marketing, public relations and accounting to risk management, to an actual "live" event.
The students worked closely with the intended beneficiary of their venture, the
Singapore Disability Sports Council (SDSC), as well as the School, SDSC, YMCA and their Citibank Mentor.
All this hard work will boil down to a
joint event with SDSC, to be held on the
2nd of August 2008 at
Ngee Ann City Civic Plaza, from
1pm to 6pm. SDSC will be holding the
Beijing 2008 Paralympics Games Road Show while the students will attempt to set the
National Record for the
“Largest Display of Wonderknots” and also raise funds for the SDSC’s “Live That Dream” Fund by
selling their handmade WonderKnots to the public.
Do come down to support both the students and those who will be representing Singapore at the
Beijing 2008 Paralympics Games in September this year.
