School Teaching Award Commends Inspiring Teachers

Someone once said, “A good teacher is like a candle - it consumes itself to light the way for others”.

And so it was for 14 lecturers from the School of Business & Accountancy (BA) who were recently awarded the School Teaching Award during the Graduation Ceremony 2011. They were rewarded for their exemplary work with students, motivating and developing talents ready to meet the demands of a global workforce.

Third-time recipient, Ms. Karen Quah, shares the mindset she has when it comes to teaching, “I have come to realise that even if there was only one student in each class listening to me, learning has already occurred in that one student. Since I have made a difference in that student, it is good enough for me to continue my cause.”

Another recipient, Mr Kevin Chua, simply says, “Think positive and be happy doing it!” In his classes, he has sought to challenge students to think of new ways to solve problems and credits his positive demeanour and use of humour in class as important tools to engage students.

Third-time recipient, Ms. Ho Wei Yee, believes it is her mission “to be a catalyst for my students to pursue their choice career and to see them develop a keen attitude towards their learning.”

Veteran educator and recipient, Mrs Choo-Chao Jin Yi, sums it up perfectly, “I believe that, with encouragement and support, students have the ability to achieve their best potential. Some soar with minimal guidance, for others, the journey is a voyage of discovery. Being able to make a difference in the lives of my students has made teaching meaningful and fulfilling for me.”

Congratulations to all 14 lecturers and our deepest gratitude for becoming a guiding light for our students!
