BFS Student Clinches Outstanding All Rounder Student Award 2011

Jeremy Tan Kian Liang, a third year Banking & Financial Services (BFS) student from the School of Business & Accountancy (BA) received the North West Community Development Council (CDC) Outstanding All Rounder Student Award (OARS) from Mayor Teo Ho Pin on 25 May 2011. In his keynote address, Mayor Teo commented that the OARS Award recipients exemplified their own unique definition of all-round excellence, not merely excelling in their studies but making a conscious effort to reach out and engage the community.

Jeremy is an epitome of the above statement. Not only has he been active in school - organising bonding camps and competitions for NP students, he has also taken part in several community service events under SPIN@BA Shine where he volunteered to deliver dinner to senior citizens and helped to spring-clean their homes. All these while maintaining an excellent academic record.

Currently, Jeremy is involved in the Ideas.Inc Business Competition, where his team has been awarded $15,000 by SPRING Singapore to incorporate and develop their business idea. Jeremy shares his excitement, “I find this experience challenging because we are dealing with a start-up company in the real sense and we'll have to juggle the complexities of the business and our studies. I believe this experience will make me more street-wise as I get the opportunity to network with venture capitalists and entrepreneurs.” Jeremy has also been selected for the prestigious California Challenge, where students will be attending a liberal arts programme in Menlo College with the aim of developing their critical thinking skills and widening their perspectives of the world.

For those of you who are having a hard time trying to balance studies and Co-Curricular Activities, Jeremy has this to share, “I believe that the starting point should be one's studies. Set aside ample time to do your assignments and to consolidate your learning. Pay attention during lectures to speed up your learning. Then you'll naturally find the time for your CCAs.”
