A team of students taking the Human Resources Management (HRM) Option in the Diploma in Business Studies programme at the School of Business & Accountancy has emerged Champions in the ITE/JC/Poly Category of the Singapore HR Challenge 2008, organised by the Singapore Human Resources Institute (SHRI).
The School's winning team, calling themselves 'The Toes,' comprised the following final year students: - Ho Mei-Ting Cheryl
- Leo Hui Tuan Samantha
- Neo Kin Mei Erika
- Teo Beng Choo Camen
- Yong Jia Min Jasmine
Erika Neo was also voted by the judges as one of the two best presenters.
Altogether 57 teams participated in the Challenge. The Grand Finals were held on 2 February 2008 at the Singapore Management University (SMU).
2 other teams from Ngee Ann Polytechnic received certificates of commendation.
Erika describes her experience:
"For this HR Challenge, we submitted a report which covered our views on the New Workplace and the New Workforce as well as our findings and recommendations for the company we chose to research. To our surprise, we were selected to take part in the Grand Finals. This meant making a presentation of our findings in front of an anticipated 300 people including distinguished practitioners from the industry. The five of us found this a daunting task and preparing for it was especially challenging. However, we emerged victorious in our category consisting of JC, ITE and other Polytechnic teams.
We must thank our advisors Mrs Tit Lai Lan, Ms Jocelyn Soh, Ms Jacqueline Fong, Mr Henry Koh, Ms Dorene Yeo and Mr See Khay Soh for their continued support and inputs.
Throughout this competition, the five of us gained an enriching, exploratory experience. We were able to analyze a real firm’s HR policies and critique it. We identified the things that the firm was doing right as well as explored how the firm could possibly improve in order to meet the demands of the New Workforce.
