 History 

1963: Ngee Ann College (NAC) was  established   in May 1963with its campus at Teochew Building , Tank Road . The 4-year degree course in Business Administrationwas one of the 7 pioneer courses offered then. 


1968: On Aug 22, NAC moved intoher new campus at Clementi and was officially renamed to Ngee Ann Technical College (NATC). The 4-year degree course in Business Administration was replaced by a 3-year diploma course.

 1970: As part of a major restructuring, the Departments of Business Administration and Accountancy were both dissolved and in place the Department of Commerce was set up.

1971: Mandarin, the medium of instruction in the college then, was substituted with English.

1972: NATC drew up a 6-year technical assistance program with the Polytechnic of Central London (PCL). The program included a system of external examiners and joint certification with PCL . The Industrial & Business Orientation Program (IBOP), which was equivalent to today's Vacation Training Program (VTP), was first introduced. Every student was to complete the program before they could graduate with a diploma. Mr. Guy Churchill, a senior staff from PCL, joined NATC as adviser and Visiting Head of the Commerce Department for a period of 3 years.

1977: The Extension Studies Division (ESD) was established by the Department of Business Studies. For the first time, part-time courses for Diploma in Industrial Management and Marketing Management were being offered to the general public.


1979: NATC and PCL officially announced that the August examinations of the year would mark the end of the joint certification programme. Nevertheless, association between the two institutions remained close through informal liaison. 

1980: With the amendments of the College Act, the Students' Union of NATC was finally, since her inception in 1972, registered with the Registrar of Societies. The Business Studies Society, one of the many Constituent Bodies of the Students' Union, came into operation. The two year full-time course for GCE A-Level holders, offering the Diploma in Business Studies, made her debut.

1981: On 19 March, the late Dr Tay Eng Soon, then Minister-in-charge of the Polytechnic, announced at a press conference the change of name for NATC, to Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP).

1987: The Industrial & Business Orientation Programme (IBOP) was renamed to Vacation Training Program (VTP). After a 17-year break, Accountancy made a comeback to NP with the introduction of the diploma course in Accountancy. Duly, the name of the Department of Business Studies was changed to the Department of Business Studies & Accountancy (BSA).

  1990: In order to provide an all rounded education for students, the Vacation Training Unit was set up on 1st of September to better co-ordinate and provide support to the VTP program. In addition, a student shop was set up in campus to provide students real-life experiences and a practical training environment in managing a business. The student shop was run solely by students enrolled in the Entrepreneurship and Small Business modules.

1991: The Department of Business Studies and Accountancy was renamed the Department of Business Studies. In the same year a student-oriented seminar called "Presenting the Diploma you can back on" was held to launch the Diploma course in Banking and Financial Service (BFS) . The Department of Accountancy was launched the same year to meet the demand for trained and skilled personnel in the Accountancy sector. 

1992: The Department of Business Studies introduced four electives for the final year students offering specializations to the Diploma in Business Studies. These four electives were marketing, personnel administration, operations and purchasing management, and travel and leisure management specialisation to better cater to the industry.

1993: A memorandum of understanding for the use of Ngee Ann facilities on campus was signed with the Singapore Institute of Marketing (SIM) on the Open University Degree Programme. The same year on the 7th of November, 34 accounting and business students accompanied by five staff members left for China under the Polytechnic's first China Immersion Programme. Due to the success of the Immersion Programme, Ngee Ann signed a memorandum with Fudan University.

1994: A new two-year evening programme for the Diploma in Strategic Marketing and Management was introduced to replace the one year part time Diploma in Marketing Management originally offered.

1998: The Personnel & Administration specialisation for the Diploma in Business Studie was renamed as Human Resource Management and the Leisure and Travel Management stream was renamed Tourism and Leisure Management specialisation to better reflect the nature of these programmes.

1999: The Info-Communcations & Electronic Commerce Specialisation was introduced in July 99.

2001: The Department of Business and the Department of Accountancy was merged on 16 June 2001. The Operations and Purchasing Management specialisation was renamed as Logistics and Purchasing Management. A new programme, the Diploma in Business Information Technology was launched in July 2001.

2002: The Info-Communcations & Electronic Commerce Specialisation was discontinued following the introduction of the Diploma in Business Information Technology in 2001.

2003: Two new specialisations for the Diploma in Business Studies were introduced. They were the Entrepreneurship and Service Management specialisations. The Logistics and Purchasing Management specialisation was discontinued as a similar programme is offered by the School of Engineering with Diploma in Logistics Engineering Management.

2006: A new Diploma, Tourism and Resort Management, was introduced.

2007: A new Specialisation in the Diploma in Business Studies course, the International Business option, was introduced.

2008:  Two new Specialisations: Psychology and Marketing Communication, will be introduced in Academic Year 2008/2009 for the Diploma in Business Studies course.  The course will now have a total of seven Specialisations.
