‘Into the World of Viruses’ – A Lab Enrichment Program (LEP) by Science Fusion

On 5th April, a small team of BMS and MBIO students from the Science Fusion interest group (comprising of Alvin Chew, Ronnica Ng, Cherie Tan, Lai Kah Ho and Jasmine Tan) conducted their inaugural LEP on the topic of virology. A group of 20 students from Tanglin Secondary School had the chance to interact with these LSCT students and learnt much more about viruses than most students ever would.

What sets this LEP apart, is that the entire session was organized and delivered by this team of enterprising students! For this LEP, the team had worked hard throughout their vacation period to build a programme that would enable participating secondary students to experience the learning of science through intensive hands-on laboratory activities. This LEP also gave them an opportunity to share with others on what motivates them to pursue a career in life sciences.

You can be sure that this team will be coming up with more interesting activities as they live up to the Science Fusion motto, ‘Come Aboard, Think Great’!

Here is their story...

2009
BLT study trip to Australia, September 2009

In September, 16 students from the Biomedical Laboratory Technology (BLT) course visited Adelaide and Alice Springs in Australia to learn about medical services there.

Why Australia? Unlike in Singapore, where the nearest hospital or polyclinic can be reached in less than half an hour, in Australia, the medical services have to cover vast distances.  The Royal Flying Doctor Service reaches out to patients who are in isolated and remote areas. The medical laboratories in Alice Springs service a vast area.

We visited a private medical laboratory in Alice Springs, where we learned how samples are collected and stored to withstand long journeys and time delays. We also learned about the work of the Royal Flying Doctor Service. There was some time out to visit the outback, where we found out about medicinal plants used by aboriginal tribes. In Adelaide, they visited hospitals as well as private laboratories.  At the Royal Women’s and Children’s Hospital in Adelaide, we learned about specialised screening tests carried out on newborn babies. We also visited a university to learn about opportunities for further studies biomedical laboratory technology.

“Looking at most of the Medical Technologists there doing their work, they seem to be very engrossed as well as loving what they are doing. This made me come to a conclusion whereby: If you are doing something you love, something where you have a passion for, the day will never be another same old routine as the day before. Instead, it would be another brand new day of exciting challenges awaiting. Learning never dies, it’s lifelong.” Edna Chai, (BLT 2011)
“From this trip, I learned that medical laboratory technologist is a global thing. No matter where we are, our skill and knowledge is going to be useful in almost any country. Anywhere with people, healthcare services and laboratories, there will be a need for professional medical lab technologist. “ Henry Teo, (BLT 2010)
